Weekly Recap: Yuma/Phoenix (AZ)

Shawn woke up Friday morning feeling a bit under the weather. It turned out that California had one last disaster to throw at us. Over the course of the drive to Yuma, he got progressively worse.

The drive to Yuma

Bryn got dinner at the barbecue place we were using as a Harvest Host, but Shawn couldn't keep any food down at this point and skipped it.

The next morning we slept in, trying to get Shawn feeling up for the drive the rest of the way to Phoenix. By midday we decided to leave, as Bryn was concerned about coming down with symptoms herself before we could make it to our destination. We managed to make the drive with only one stop, and arrived at Shawn's cousin's small ranch just north of Phoenix around dinnertime on Saturday. We had a quick chat with them, but kept our distance to avoid potentially giving them what we suspected to be norovirus again.

We set up the camper at one of their 5 (that's right!) RV hookup locations, though Shawn took a guest suite with a private bathroom. Symptoms did not alleviate overnight, and we headed to the ER to get some fluids via IV. This turned into a 3 day stay because the dehydration was severe enough to cause kidney issues. We discovered that the root cause was actually rotavirus, which we suspect must have been caught from a child during the visit to the zoo. While Shawn was rehydrating in the hospital, Bryn worked in the camper and visited after work.

After his kidney levels returned to normal and the rotavirus symptoms had started to subside, Shawn returned back to the camper on Tuesday night. The rest of the week was spent working from the camper and isolating from Shawn's cousins until the contagious period ended. We did manage to catch up with Shawn's cousins by hanging out near the outdoor fire.

A rainbow when we finally left the hospital!
