Weekly Recap: Fort Morgan Week 2 (CO)

After a pretty miserable night, Bryn's lungs started recovering from the high-altitude exertion. Over the next couple of days they returned to normal. We took Sunday easy, hanging around the campground. While Bryn recovered, Shawn tried out the disc golf course next door, named Pessimist. It was only a 90 second walk to the course, which was very fun but difficult and the longest course he has ever played. On hole 18 he threw 3 of his best throws ever back-to-back-to-back and still bogeyed the par 4.

How is this a par 4?
A well-named course

We took Monday and Tuesday off from work to get in some skiing while the slopes were empty. We woke up very early Monday and drove to Breckenridge, about a 3 hour drive since the campsite is east of Denver. We spent most of the day skiing on Peak 10, but did do a few runs working our way over there and back. The open blacks were a little icy, but the glades had great powder and we had a blast in the trees. It was our first ski day in about 3 months (since Nevada!), so we ended up tiring out a bit early. We had a little après ski at the base, then picked up some pizza and headed to our hotel near Keystone. We spent the evening relaxing in the hot tub with wine and pizza.

The next day we went to Keystone, which was only 1 minute away from our hotel. We immediately headed to the Outback, getting in some great runs there before the snow was touched by others. We worked our way back towards the front side of the mountain over the course of the day, and the crowds picked up the closer we got to the base. We ended the day a bit early again, as two days in a row after months off was really catching up to us. Plus, we had avoided almost any lift lines and really packed in the runs. Additionally, there was a storm rolling through the area in the early evening so we wanted to make sure we got through the pass back down to Denver before it hit.

We stopped in Denver for dinner with a pair of friends who moved to Denver from Boston last year. Bryn visited them briefly in October, but Shawn hadn't seen them at all since the summer. It was great to catch up and we all had so much to share with our various moves. We ate at Colorado Sake Company before heading back to the campground.

We spent the rest of the week working from the camper and recovering our legs. Friday night we did some laundry, Shawn tried to go to the Optimist disc golf course but had forgotten his discs in the camper, and then we watched basketball and had dinner at the Mav.

Saturday we headed back into Denver. We worked out at Planet Fitness then checked into a hotel, which ended up being a lengthy process. Fortunately, we still had time to sneak in an afternoon snack at Fire on the Mountain, a shockingly good chicken place. Then we met up with some friends, one of whom just happened to be in Denver that day on the way home from a work trip. We started by watching the 45 minute long light show at the International Church of Cannabis, while sober. This is a mistake.

Afterwards we bar hopped along South Broadway, including a stop at a barcade. We ended the night with a late dinner at Chubby Cattle Denver for all you can eat hot pot. Our friends headed out to continue the party in River North, but we went back to our hotel to rest up for another ski day.
